Batiente*, a project curated by Víctor Palacios, was presented in 2013 in Casa del Lago as an additional platform for artistic production and collaboration. Visual artists were invited to take part in this project by designing a temporary flag for the institution. A flag raising ceremony, which included performative and sonorous elements, as well as interactive events with the public, was organized for the exhibition of each flag.
In addition totheintrinsic vexillological analysis embedded in this artistic exercise, our goal was to understand it as a place for reflection and expression of ideas, concepts, and sociopolitical and historical manifestos. Every flag is a statement, a symbolic construct that, through shape and color, communicates and transmits something specific.
*Batiente (in English, fly);the half or edge of a flag farthest away from the flagpole
**Vexillology; is the study of the history, symbolism, and usage of flags
